As we age naturally, the face typically will lose some of the volume in the cheek area and around the mouth, resulting in sagging skin. We have seen recently with the popularity of Semaglutide injections such as Wegovy®, Ozempic®, and Mounjaro® used for weight loss, patients are having a similar effect in accelerating that aging process in their face. Fortunately, hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers, (Juvéderm Voluma® XC, Juvéderm Vollure® XC, Juvéderm Volux® XC and Juvéderm Volbella® XC), can be useful treatments to help restore fullness and symmetry to the face.
It is interesting that as we gain weight in our body, we do not grow more fat cells. The fat cells simply enlarge like a balloon. When we lose weight, they lose volume. The unfortunate part of this process is that we do not have control over which fat cells in our body are going to be depleted. With aging and weight loss, patients will often develop hollowness and a gaunt or “deflated” appearance. This can make a patient look older. The advantage of HA fillers are that they can be used in the office with minimal to no downtime. Nevertheless, the one challenge with fillers is that there is no way to quantify for a patient how much filler they will need to achieve full correction or their desired result.
For a patient considering volume restoration to the face, the process is like climbing up a flight of stairs. With each syringe of filler, a patient will notice improvement. Being comfortable in one’s own skin is an important part of one’s well-being. At the end of the day, we are at our best when we look in the mirror and see an image that reflects how we feel on the inside. If you have recently lost weight via diet, exercise or by using any of the injections mentioned above, and are noticing hollowness in your face, using an HA filler might really help you achieve your desired result!
