Many people have considered trying Botox® treatments as a way to refresh the look of their skin and face. Yet, very often people will not give this treatment a try because they don’t have enough
information to make a sound decision.
As an experienced facial plastic surgeon, I encounter many patients with common questions and concerns about Botox® treatments. I want to share some information with you about what to look for in Botox® treatments in Atlanta, GA.
Let’s begin with some important background information about Botox®.
How Botox® Treatments Work
Botox® is a skin rejuvenation treatment used to remedy wrinkles and lines that develop on your face as you age. Every time your face muscles contract, the collagen and supporting structures supporting your skin flex back and forth and eventually break. This results in lines and wrinkles that appear around your lips, mouth, nose, eyes and forehead. Bands may also appear on your neck and chest.
These conditions go by names like “ the 11’s”,“crow’s feet” (around the eyes) and “bunny lines” (along the side of the nose).
Botox® works by relaxing your muscles using botulinum toxin. This allows the supporting layer of the skin to repair itself, strengthening your skin and causing wrinkles and lines to disappear over time.
What Should I Look for in Botox® Treatments in Atlanta?
There are a few things you should look for when considering Botox® treatments.
First, you should look for a doctor with solid credentials. I am a double-board certified facial plastic surgeon. That means two independent medical organizations have certified that I meet the standards for education, qualifications and training required to practice facial plastic surgery.
Additionally, look for a facial plastic surgeon who has been specifically trained in how to administer Botox® treatments. As a National Trainer for Allergan, the manufacturer of Botox®, I have instructed doctors from around the world on how to safely and effectively dispense Botox® treatments.
You should also look for a doctor that provides a thorough consultation before administering treatment.
During a consultation, I spend time with each of my patients to learn about their aesthetic goals and medical history. I also listen to any questions and concerns they may have about the procedure. This enables me to create a customized Botox® treatment plan for each patient based on their needs.
Not all botulinum toxins are created equal. There are several types on the market Botox, Dysport and Xeomen. I review the different types and discuss which one is most appropriate for your condition. Botulinum toxins are dose dependent. They are measured in units. The FDA studies showed that to achieve effective results, a certain number of units are needed in an area. Subsequent studies showed, if more is used, the results last longer and are more effective. During the consultation, we will discuss the recommended doses. For the first timers, I generally recommend following the recommended guidelines. Experienced users treatment plans may vary from the recommended guidelines depending on their past responses.
I also explain the steps in the Botox® procedure so patients know what to expect. Botox® treatments typically take about fifteen minutes. Your treatment plan may consist of multiple sessions over several months, depending on your cosmetic goals. While there are some mild, temporary side effects, there is little to no downtime following a treatment.
Having good information about Botox® will help you decide if this skin rejuvenation treatment is right for you. If you would like more information, I encourage you toschedule a consultation with me at the Maloney Center for Facial Plastic Surgery in Atlanta.
